Fellow Spotlight - Esmael OmarEsmael Omar, a 2010 Fellow, is the Director of Impact Kenya Youth Initiative. He educates young people, young female sex workers, and other minority groups about HIV/AIDS, and is an advocate for LGBT rights. Since returning home to Kenya, Esmael has participated in several national and international conferences, and has received training in NGO management. Esmael says the most important knowledge he gained during his fellowship was on sexual orientation and its presence in contemporary African literature. This knowledge has helped him in his work with the LGBT community. Reflecting on the impact of the Fellowship on his career, Esmael says it helped to deepen his understanding of sexuality issues, which helped him attract more funders for his work. He is a recipient of the 2010 MTV Staying Alive Foundation Award for his work with youth female sex workers in Narok, Kenya. He also received a grant from the AIDS Population Health Integrated Assistance Project (APHIA II), funded by USAID. He has also risen to be a national advocate on sexual health and rights issues and now sits on several steering committees in the Ministry of Health.
